Job Description

Title: Deck hand
Department: Deck
Reports to: Senior Deckhand

Job summary:

 

  • Set up of the passenger areas in preparation for dinner, entertainment and charter cruises.
  • Tear down and stowage of passenger area equipment including but not limited to tables, chairs and decorations within the passenger areas.
  • Cleaning of the passenger areas including, windows, decks and head.
  • Clean and maintain vessel and deck gear including all safety equipment.
  • Assist with loading and unloading passengers and gear including meal service equipment.
  • Instruct passengers on vessel safety procedures and vessel procedures.
  • Should be able to work with, entertain, instruct and converse with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • A positive attitude and friendly disposition is a desirable attribute.
  • Must be willing/able to participate in all drills.
  • Must be able to give safety presentation to clients, and keep a sharp eye for safety hazards.
  • Must become knowledgeable about history of the Hudson River.

    Summary of essential job functions

    Deck hands are responsible for the cleaning and routine maintenance of the passenger areas as well ensuring that passengers are provided with all amenities available aboard the vessel. This includes setting of dining tables, teardown and stowage of materials, and ensuring that passengers are acting in a safe manner aboard the vessel.

    Deck hands are to report to the vessel a minimum of one hour prior to departure or earlier if requested by the Senior Deck Hand. Deck hands will remain on board the vessel during the voyage and interface with passengers ensuring that passenger comforts are taken care of in a exemplary fashion. 

    Minimum requirements

     

  • Pre employment and periodic drug and alcohol screening is required.
  • U.S. Citizen
  • 17 years of age
  • Hospitality experience is strongly preferred
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certification Preferred
  • Any and all marine/boating experience is a plus

    Abilities required

     

  • Physically able to assist passengers as directed by the Load Master or Ships Captain with the ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to work afloat without getting sea sick.
  • Must be able to perform repeated stair climbing, bending and twisting, entry into small spaces.

    COMPENSATION

    • Vessel deckhand is a hourly wage position per agreement with Empire Cruise Lines.
    • In accordance with maritime traditions all tips are pooled and split among all crew members and Captain.
